Notes from
The Purity Principle
By Randy Alcorn
1 When we cling to sin, we are making a trade with the devil,
who never keeps his bargains. We are trading something of
God for a lie.
2 Sinning is like pushing a book across a table toward the
edge; the book will fall with a great crash.
3 Sin is so temporary. And it is just not worthwhile. We forfeit
something precious and steal joy and happiness from others
and Jesus by sinning.
4 Once lost, some opportunities are never regained. I don’t
want to live with a multitude of “might- have- been,” with such
regret.
5 PURITY IS ALWAYS SMART, IMPURITY IS ALWAYS STUPID.
OBEDIENCE IS ALWAYS SMART; DISOBEDIENCE (SIN) IS
ALWAYS STUPID.
6 Every action in line with God and his character and the
laws derived from His character are always rewarded. Every
action that violates His character, however, is punished.
7 God doesn’t always go “BAM “on us when we sin, the
punishment is built in. it’s the way the universe works: we obey
and we get life, we disobey and we reap destruction. It will not
change, so I need to stop being a fool, thinking somehow I won’
t get destruction if I sin. I will.
8 Satan's greatest victories and our biggest defeats come
when he gets us to ask, “Should I choose what God commands
me …or should I do what’s best for me? The very framing of
question shows how badly we’re deceived. We will not
consistently choose God’s way until we come to understand
that his way is always best for us.
9 The fear of God is a profound respect for his holiness,
which includes a fear of the consequences of disobeying Him.
10 We can choose blessings: joy, peace, life, hope, and
laughter. Or we can choose cures: misery, scars, a handful of
ashes. God says, if you choose My plan, you’ll find happiness.
There will be a smile on your face. Sure, this is a fallen world.
But if you say no to your sinful desires that want to master you,
if you walk with ME you’ll experience My peace. If you reject My
standards, you will be surrendered to forces that will tear your
life apart.
11 It’s interesting how when we are in sin we aren’t even
happy. God said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has
your countenance fallen? If you do well, will not your
countenance be lifted up? “In Isaiah 3:9 it says “the very look
on their faces give them away and displays their guilt.”
12 We never get away with sin. Never ever.
13 The fear of God shouldn’t scare us out of our wits; it
should scare us into them. “The fear of the Lord is fountain of
life, turning a man from the snares of death.”
14 Sin is not in our best interest. Rather, it is what we
imagine is be in our best interest because we have allowed
ourselves to be deceived.
15 Run from temptation as from a slithering cobra or a live
grenade. Embrace purity like a drowning person clings to a life
preserver.
16 When God calls on us to pursue purity, you are not
being asked to do what will deprive you of joy. In fact you are
being called on to do what will being you the greatest joy.
17 All my choices amount to one of two prayers :( a) God,
bless me for obeying You. (b) God curse me for disobeying
you.
18 Sin is not something I do, it is something I am. When I
sin, I put my life on the line. That is very dangerous.
19 God has said a lot about what his will is. So I can start
by obeying that. There’s not mush sense in finding God will on
this thing and that if I ignore what He has already told me.
20 God shed his blood for me. I am not my own. God has
every right to tell me what to do.
21 Fortunately for me, God always acts not only for his
Glory, but for my best interests. So I can fully trust that
whatever He forbids would have hurt me... And whatever He
commands will only help me.
22 I must guard myself against sin or it will overtake me.
23 “You may be sure that your sin will find you out” Numbers
32: 23).
24 Satan is a smooth, convincing liar. Giving into
temptations allows the devil to destroy us. Jesus tells us truth
that sets us free!
25 When I see that God offers me joys and pleasures that
sin does not, this is a breakthrough. But that breakthrough will
come only when I pursue God, making Him the object of my
quest.
26 When my thirst for joy is satisfied by Christ, sin
becomes unattractive.
27 The rest of your life will be largely determined by how
you answer this question: who will you?
28 Tomorrow’s character is made out of today’s thoughts.
We become what we think. Like a photographic plate forming
an image, our minds accumulate what we expose it to, godly or
ungodly. Think on what is true, pure, noble, praiseworthy …
think on Philippians 4:8.
29 What kind of person we are becoming is determined by
what we are taking into our brains.
30 Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a
habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character. Reap a
destiny.
31 Our minds are not vacuums. They will be filled with
something impure thought are pushed out by pure thoughts.
32 Sin slowly kills us.
33 Don’t try to “resist” temptation------ run from it.
34 When we set our minds on heaven, where Christ is ., He
empowers us to put to death the works of the old nature.
35 “Resist the devil and he will flee from you,’ (James 4:7).
Would God ask you to do abstain from impurity if that were
impossible?
36 “To fear the Lord is to hate evil, (Proverbs 8:13).
37 Have a” CUT IT OFF”! Attitude about sin. The battle is too
intense, and the stakes are too high to approach purity casually
or gradually.
38 Preventative action (contacting others, avoiding
temptation, talking to Jesus) is mush better than failing and
then confessing sin, though that is important.
39 No matter what we’ve done, the moment we repent and
embrace His forgiveness. We can be right in the center of God’
s will.
40 If we plant purity today, we will reap a rich harvest. There
will be no regret.
